How do I know if my faith is genuine or just wishful thinking and hypocrisy?

To know if your faith is genuine, you do not need to look at religious rituals or fancy words about God, but at how you live and treat people around you every day. Real faith is not a flawless life where you never make mistakes; it is a new direction of the heart that shows up in a sincere desire to follow in the steps of Jesus. When your daily routine reflects obedience to God’s guidance and genuine care for your neighbor, your faith is not make-believe—it is alive and working inside you.

Pull up a chair and have coffee with me. Wondering whether you are faking it or living a lie is very common, and it is a good sign that you care. People who only care about appearances do not lose sleep over questions like this.

Far Beyond Fancy Words and Cold Rules

Often, we fall into the trap of thinking that faith is merely agreeing with ideas in our head, singing pretty songs on Sunday, or recalling a prayer we said long ago. But the Bible, in the letter of 1 John, shows us that true faith does not live merely on our lips. It reveals itself in our daily habits and choices.

The apostle John wrote his letter with down-to-earth advice for everyday folks who wrestled with these exact worries. He did not want to fill anyone with fear; he wanted to give quiet rest to tired hearts. He explained that our real security before God does not come from being flawless. Rather, it comes from trusting Jesus, who welcomes us with kindness even when we stumble. God’s grace—His generous love that forgives us when we do not deserve it—carries power: it slowly reshapes how we walk through this world.

First Sign: A Sincere Desire to Obey

The first practical test that the Bible offers us is found in 1 John 2:3-6. The text tells us that we know we truly know God when we treasure His commandments and seek to walk just as Jesus walked.

Keeping His commandments does not mean that you never make a mistake. It means that God’s Word has become your daily compass, a treasure that you respect and hold dear. A person with false faith often talks about loving God, but has no desire to change dishonest habits, such as cheating people in business or living a lie. They want God’s free forgiveness, but still want to remain the boss of their own lives.

On the other hand, someone who possesses sincere faith feels a gentle nudge in their heart when they take a wrong turn, and they want to make things right. Living the way Jesus lived means seeking honesty, humility, and truth, even when nobody is watching. It is never about following a cold list of rules, but about desiring to resemble Jesus a little bit more each day.

Second Sign: How You Treat People in Real Life

The second test is just as essential, and it touches right where we live every day. In 1 John 2:7-11, the Bible tells us that anyone who claims to live in God’s light, but harbors hatred in their heart toward a brother or sister, is still wandering in the dark.

In practical life, what does it mean to hate? It does not only mean wishing harm on someone with loud anger. It also means keeping your heart shut, holding grudges for months, treating others with cold indifference, pretending someone else’s pain does not matter, or refusing to forgive. John reminds us with tender words: it does not help to sing praises on the weekend if you go home and treat your family with harsh words and disrespect.

Genuine faith shows up when you choose patience, when you reach out a helping hand, and when you decide not to pay back evil with evil. When you choose to forgive someone who hurt you, God’s light becomes visible in your routine. Those who love like this do not set traps for others, they do not deceive, and they build peaceful bridges instead of walls.

A Sure Hope That Rests the Heart

Perhaps, as you read these words, you feel like you are still far from where you ought to be. Please do not let your heart become discouraged. The purpose of this gentle self-check is not to make you think you have to earn God’s favor. None of us could ever earn God’s love through our own effort or hard work.

The deep confidence of our faith always begins with Jesus Himself, who speaks on our behalf and washes our past clean with His mercy. When that truth sinks deep into your soul, the natural outcome is real personal change. You slowly begin to want what pleases Him, and you learn how to care for folks standing right next to you. The key question that tells you whether your faith is real is not, "Am I totally perfect?" but rather, "Is my heart truly open to being changed by Jesus?"

Practical Next Step

To put this reflection into practice today, try a very simple step. Think of one specific person in your life with whom you have had tension or distance because of hurt feelings. Today, send that person a kind message, offer a small favor without expecting anything back, or simply whisper a sincere prayer asking God to bless their life. Choosing forgiveness and quiet kindness in the real world is the most beautiful proof that your faith is alive and true.
