How can I be completely sure that God truly loves and accepts me?

How can I be completely sure that God truly loves and accepts me?

You can be completely sure that God loves and accepts you by looking at what He has already done in history, not at how you feel inside. God’s love for you is not an empty promise, nor does it depend on whether you are having a good or bad day. He proved this deep affection by sending His own Son, Jesus, to carry your pain and pay for all your sins once and for all.

Pull up a chair and let us talk like old friends sharing coffee at the kitchen table. Many days feel heavy, and guilt weighs on our hearts. We look in the mirror, see our faults, remember wrong things we did or said, and quickly think: "God must be so disappointed in me." It is natural to feel this way because our world teaches us that acceptance must be earned through good performance. But God’s love works by a completely different and far more gracious logic.

Three witnesses in our history

In 1 John chapter 5, verses 6 through 8, the Bible says Jesus came "by water and blood," and the Holy Spirit confirms all of this. That phrasing may sound strange at first, but picture a courtroom scene. When someone needs to prove an important truth, they bring trustworthy witnesses and solid documents that no one can deny. God did this very thing in history to give our hearts quiet confidence.

The water points to the baptism of Jesus in the river. On that day, Jesus, who never sinned, entered the water alongside ordinary, broken people. He was publicly declaring to the whole world: "I came to stand beside you, carry your burdens, and walk with you." At that exact moment, God the Father spoke from heaven with love, confirming that this was His beloved Son.

Jesus did not come only by water, but also by blood, pointing directly to the cross. He did not come just to give nice advice or act as a good role model for daily life. Jesus went all the way, giving His life to pay the price for our mistakes. The Bible calls this redemption, meaning paying a full ransom so someone is set free from condemnation. On the cross, Jesus took our place.

The third witness is the Holy Spirit. He is like a loyal friend who never lets an important promise be forgotten. When we read Scripture, the Holy Spirit speaks gently to our hearts, showing us that this message is not a made-up story, but living truth that brings real comfort to our hardest days.

If we trust people, why doubt God?

Think about how much you trust people during a normal week. You visit a doctor, take a paper prescription signed by someone you barely know, and take the medicine without worry. When you sign a contract or buy something on credit, you trust the word and signatures of other people. We do this every day without hesitation.

The apostle John uses this simple picture to ask a gentle, honest question: if we regularly accept the word of ordinary people who make mistakes, should we not trust God even more? God knows all about you, never makes a mistake, and never lies. When He says He loves you, He speaks the absolute truth.

God is not like a friend who promises to help you move and disappears on moving day. He proved His loyalty by giving the most precious treasure He had: His Son. To say God does not love you or forgive you is like saying the cross was useless or not enough. But the cross was completely sufficient to wash away all our sins.

Certainty does not depend on your feelings

The passage ends with a clear, powerful sentence: "Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life." Notice what this verse says. It does not say eternal life belongs only to people who never stumble, nor does it require you to feel warm, happy emotions every day. It simply says that whoever has Jesus has life.

Our emotions change like the weather outside. One moment the sun shines, and an hour later the sky turns gray and rainy. If your peace depended on waking up happy every morning, you would always feel insecure. Some days we feel strong, and other days sadness or worry takes over.

Hold onto this truth: God’s love for you does not rest on your daily mood or inner strength, but on the historic fact that Jesus died and rose again for you. You do not need to recall the exact date you first believed. The real question is: do you trust Jesus with your life today? If so, you are accepted, forgiven, and safe.

Practical next step

Today, when that nagging feeling hits that you are not good enough, or when you feel afraid of being rejected, stop what you are doing for two quiet minutes. Take a deep breath, let go of self-criticism, and do not make excuses for past mistakes.

Pray a simple, sincere prayer from your heart, talking to God like a loving father: "Lord, my feelings change all the time and I have many weaknesses, but today I choose to trust what Jesus did for me on the cross. I receive Your love, and I rest knowing that You forgive me and accept me." Then, stand up and go about your day in peace, knowing you belong to God.
