How does God speak to ordinary people today and how can I hear Him?
God is not silent: He speaks warmly to our hearts today through Jesus and the Bible.

God speaks to ordinary people today in a clear, gentle, and accessible way through the Bible, and most clearly through the life of Jesus Christ. He does not hide behind complicated puzzles or mysterious rituals to talk with you. To hear His voice in your daily life, simply open the Scriptures with an honest heart, look at how Jesus lived, and welcome His practical guidance into your decisions.
A Creator who has never been silent
Pull up a comfortable chair, take a deep breath, and let us talk together like friends. If you have ever looked up at a night sky full of bright stars and felt a deep sense of peace, you have already caught a gentle glimpse of God. If you have ever stood by the ocean shore watching the waves roll in, that wonder did not happen by accident. The Bible tells us in Psalm 19 that all of creation speaks of God’s glory, day after day showing His faithful care for us.
The apostle Paul wrote in Romans that God’s invisible qualities can be clearly understood through the things He made. God has never left us wandering alone in the dark. He is not like an inventor who built a clock, wound it up, and then walked away. He stays near, and He keeps reaching out to us.
He communicates with us out of pure grace. Grace simply means a free, loving gift that we could never earn. God does not owe us anything, yet He breaks the silence because He loves us like a good father loves his children. He takes the first step toward us because He desires a warm friendship built on trust.
A long conversation that began long ago
This conversation did not begin yesterday. In the book of Hebrews, the writer explains that long ago, God spoke to our ancestors many times and in many different ways. He used dreams, visions, and the faithful voices of ordinary men called prophets.
Those early messages are preserved in the first part of the Bible, the Old Testament. Some people think these ancient stories are dusty and have no meaning for our modern lives, but that is a big mistake. They work like a family photo album, showing God’s steady faithfulness across human history.
Romans 15:4 reminds us that everything recorded in the past was written to teach us, giving us patience, deep comfort, and real hope. When you read about how God protected and helped ordinary people long ago, you learn an encouraging truth: the same God who held them up back then is the exact same God holding you and your family today.
God's voice now has a human face: Jesus Christ
This long conversation reached its highest point when Jesus Christ came to earth. Hebrews tells us that in these last days, God has spoken to us through His Son. There is a huge difference between getting a written note from a messenger and having the Son of God visit your home. Jesus does not speak as a stranger; He knows your deepest hurts and daily worries.
Jesus did not just share nice words; He is God’s living message. He healed the sick, welcomed people who were pushed away, freely forgave mistakes, and gave rest to the weary. In John 14, Jesus said that whoever sees Him has seen the Father. If you ever wonder what God is like, simply look at how Jesus treated people with kindness and respect.
Jesus also brought us redemption. In everyday language, redemption means paying a ransom to set a captive free. That is what Jesus did on the cross: He paid for our faults so we could walk with heads held high, free from guilt and surrounded by love. He rules over all things, yet He understands every quiet pain in your chest.
How to tune your ears in a busy world
With bills to pay, family chores, and constant phone notifications, how can we actually hear God today? The answer is very practical: you hear God’s voice whenever you read the Bible with an open heart and quiet prayer. When the Scriptures speak, God is speaking directly to you.
Hearing Him does not require special powers or long hours locked inside a church building. It only asks that you slow down your racing thoughts for a few brief moments. When you read Jesus telling you not to worry about tomorrow, that is His voice bringing peace to your heart. When you read that you should forgive someone who hurt you, that is His voice protecting you from bitterness.
God’s voice always brings peace, truth, clarity, and hope. It never pushes you toward cruelty, selfishness, or panic. It feels like a safe hug that guides you toward what is good.
A simple step you can take today
To hear God’s voice today, set aside ten quiet minutes in a comfortable spot at home. Turn off the television, silence your phone, and close your eyes for a moment. Pray a short, honest prayer: "God, I do not understand everything, but I want to learn to hear You. Please speak to my heart today."
Then open the Gospel of Mark to chapter 1 and read a few verses slowly. Do not worry about reading a lot; just read a small part carefully at your own pace. Ask yourself: "What does Jesus do here, and what does this teach me for my life today?" Then put that kindness into practice with someone in your home or at work. That is how God’s voice comes alive in our daily routine.
